How Much Is My Crypto Actually Worth Right Now?

You bought some Bitcoin a while back. Or maybe Ethereum, Solana, or one of the other big names. You check your wallet or exchange once in a while, see a number, and wonder: is that actually good? What would it be in dollars right now?

This is the most common question casual crypto holders have — and it's surprisingly hard to answer quickly. Most portfolio tools are built for people who trade every day. They're full of charts, leverage options, and alerts. If you just want to know what your holdings are worth in plain dollars, that's usually buried somewhere.

Why the number in your wallet isn't the full picture

Your wallet or exchange shows you a coin balance — 0.15 BTC, 2.3 ETH. But the dollar value of that balance changes constantly because crypto prices move 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

On a quiet day, prices might shift a couple of percent. During a major news event they can move 10–20% in a single morning. So the answer to "what is my crypto worth?" depends entirely on when you're asking.

The simple way to get today's number

To find out what your holdings are worth right now, you need two things: the amount of each coin you own, and the current price. Multiply them together and you have your portfolio value.

In practice, this means:

  • 1.Open your wallet app or exchange account and note how much of each coin you hold.
  • 2.Look up the current price of each coin (any reputable crypto site will have it).
  • 3.Multiply: amount × price = current value for each coin.
  • 4.Add them up for your total portfolio value.

What about the 24-hour change?

Once you know today's value, the next natural question is: is it more or less than yesterday? This is the 24-hour change. Most price sites show this as a percentage — so if BTC is up 3% today, your BTC holding is worth 3% more than it was 24 hours ago.

It's worth keeping this in perspective: a single day's movement tells you almost nothing about whether crypto is a good investment for you. What matters more is the bigger picture — how does your total value compare to what you originally put in?

A quick note on taxes and cost basis

In most countries, what you paid for your crypto (your "cost basis") affects how much tax you might owe when you sell. Knowing your current value is useful, but knowing your gain or loss requires comparing it to what you originally paid.

If you've held crypto across multiple exchanges or over a long time, tracking cost basis can get complex. That's worth keeping in mind as your portfolio grows — but just knowing today's value is a perfectly reasonable starting point.

Don't get lost in the noise

Crypto has a way of generating constant noise — hourly price updates, Twitter debates about which coin will "moon," endless alerts from apps that want your attention. For casual holders, most of that isn't useful.

A monthly check-in is usually enough. Type in your current holdings, see what they're worth, note the change, and get on with your life. You don't need to watch a dashboard all day to be a sensible crypto holder.
